Vikings Go Berzerk Slot Review

Vikings Go Berzerk is the slot that made Yggdrasil’s Viking series famous. Released in 2016 as a follow-up to Vikings Go Wild, it took a solid idea, Vikings fighting a monster to become Wilds, and added a layer of progress that keeps you invested. Each of the four Vikings has a personal rage meter that fills over time. When one is full, that Viking goes berzerk and wins every fight in the free spins.

The result is a game where the base game is not just a wait for scatters. Every win with a Viking pushes a meter closer to a guaranteed feature, and treasure chests add surprise rewards along the way. Volatility is medium to high, and the free spins can be very rewarding when the sticky Wilds pile up.

Four heroes on a longship

The game is set on board a Viking ship at sea, with the reels framed by wood, shields and stormy skies. Four Viking warriors are the high-paying symbols, each with a distinct look and personality. Four coins in different metals make up the low pays. Yggdrasil’s art is detailed and lively, and the battle animations in the free spins are short but satisfying.

The grid is five reels by four rows, with 25 paylines paying from left to right. Wins need three or more matching symbols in sequence from the first reel. The Wild substitutes for the regular symbols, though not for scatters or the treasure chests.

Rage meters: progress you can see

The defining feature sits above the reels. Each Viking has a personal rage meter. Whenever you win in the base game with that Viking, his meter rises. Coin wins do not count. When a meter is full, the game moves into free spins with that particular Viking in Berzerk Mode.

This changes how the base game feels. A modest win with one of the warriors is not just a small payout; it also brings his feature closer. You can see at a glance which Viking is nearest to going berzerk, and that gives you something to follow on every spin.

It is worth being clear about what the meters do not do. They do not make a feature due after a certain number of spins, and they fill at their own pace depending on which Vikings land in wins. Some sessions will push a meter to the top fairly quickly, others will leave all four halfway full.

Battles with the Siren

Free spins are where the Vikings fight. Whenever a Viking lands during the round, he battles the Siren. If he wins, he turns into a sticky Wild that stays in place until the free spins end. If he loses, he remains a normal symbol.

A berzerk Viking always wins his battle. That is the advantage of entering free spins through a full rage meter: every time your berzerk hero lands, he becomes a sticky Wild without any risk. Ordinary Vikings can still fight and win, but they can also lose.

The more Vikings that turn into sticky Wilds early in the round, the better the rest of the bonus becomes. Wilds that arrive in the first couple of spins connect with every later spin, while those that land at the end help only once or twice. With 25 lines on a four-row grid, a handful of well-placed sticky Wilds can cover a lot of lines.

What a berzerk bonus looks like

Say the meter of one Viking fills after a run of small wins. The game switches to seven free spins with him in Berzerk Mode, and the random pre-bonus adds a starting Wild. On the first spin your berzerk hero lands on reel two and becomes sticky without a fight. On spin three an ordinary Viking lands on reel four and takes on the Siren. He wins, so now there are three Wilds fixed on the board for the remaining spins, and every Viking that lands afterwards adds to the pile.

Now picture the same round where the berzerk hero does not land until spin six and the ordinary Viking loses. The bonus pays a few small lines and ends. Both rounds started from the same full meter. The guarantee covers the battle, not the landing, and that is the detail many players miss.

Treasure chests and the Golden Chest

Treasure chests add a second layer of surprise. A regular chest can land on reel four, and a Golden Treasure Chest on reel five. When they appear, they open with a reward, which can be a cash prize or free spins. The Golden Chest offers bigger prizes and can also unlock the best rewards in the game, including Ragnarök Free Spins and a boost to the rage meters.

In free spins, chests remain active and can add extra spins, more Wilds or a full Wild reel. They are not frequent, but they give rounds an extra chance to turn from average to strong.

Scatter free spins and the random bonus

Free spins can also be triggered the classic way, with scatters. Three, four or five scatters award 7, 14 or 21 free spins. In this case none of the Vikings starts berzerk, so every Viking has to win his battle on his own.

Whenever free spins start, a random bonus is added before the round begins. It can be a modest boost, such as a starting Wild or an extra spin, or something much bigger. The best of these is Ragnarök Free Spins, in which all four Vikings are in Berzerk Mode. In Ragnarök every Viking that lands becomes a sticky Wild, and that is the game’s most explosive scenario. It is also the rarest.

Choosing your route into the bonus

Because there are several ways into free spins, it helps to understand how they differ. A rage meter bonus gives one guaranteed winner, so at least one hero will always turn sticky when he appears. A scatter bonus may give more spins, but every battle is uncertain. A chest can also award free spins with its own starting conditions.

None of these routes is predictable, and you cannot choose which one you get. The useful lesson is simply that the type of bonus matters more than its length. Seven spins with a berzerk hero can easily outperform fourteen spins where every Viking loses his fight.

RTP, volatility and payouts

Yggdrasil lists the RTP at 96.1%, which is a good figure for a slot of this era. It is a long-term average, not a promise for any session, and our guide to slot RTP explains why.

Volatility is rated medium to high. The base game pays regularly enough to keep sessions going, mostly through small line wins, but the bigger results come from free spins with several sticky Wilds. Weak bonus rounds are common, especially when ordinary Vikings lose their battles.

We have not listed a maximum win multiplier. Yggdrasil quotes a top win as a cash amount rather than a multiple of the bet, and published multipliers from other sources do not agree with it, so we would rather not give you a figure we cannot stand behind.

Stakes and session tips

Bets run from €0.25 to €125 per spin across 25 fixed lines.

  • The rage meters reward longer sessions, but never raise your budget to finish a meter. A half-full meter is not a reason to keep playing.
  • Pick a stake that gives you plenty of spins, because both scatters and full meters can take a while.
  • Remember that coin wins do not fill the meters. Only Viking wins count.
  • Try the free demo above to watch how the meters move before playing for money.

The Vikings series and other Norse slots

Vikings Go Berzerk sits between Vikings Go Wild, the 2015 original, and the later Vikings Go to Hell, which takes the battles into the underworld with more aggressive maths. Of the trilogy, Berzerk is the one most players remember, because the rage meters give it a sense of progress the others lack.

For a different take on Norse mythology, Play’n GO’s Viking Runecraft swaps paylines for a 7×7 rune grid with the gods’ powers as features. Fans of Yggdrasil’s design should also try Valley of the Gods, an Egyptian grid slot with clearing blockers. More games from the studio are on our Yggdrasil page, and our free spins guide explains how casinos often use slots like this in promotions.

What works in Vikings Go Berzerk and what doesn’t

What works:

  • Rage meters give the base game a real sense of progress
  • Siren battles make every Viking in free spins exciting
  • Ragnarök Free Spins are one of the best bonus scenarios in the genre
  • Strong 96.1% RTP and detailed artwork

What doesn’t:

  • Ordinary Vikings often lose their battles, leading to weak rounds
  • Meters can take a long time to fill
  • Treasure chests are fairly rare
  • No clear maximum win multiplier published by the studio

Our verdict on Vikings Go Berzerk

Vikings Go Berzerk earned its place as a modern classic. The rage meters give you a reason to care about every Viking win, the Siren battles add genuine suspense, and the free spins can build into something special when the sticky Wilds stack up. The swings are real and plenty of bonus rounds fall flat, but few slots make the journey to the feature this engaging. It is a strong pick for players who like visible progress and medium-to-high risk.
