Columbus Deluxe is Novomatic’s seafaring classic: ten lines, Columbus as the Wild, and 10 free games triggered by the three ships, during which every ship becomes a Wild too.
Columbus Deluxe is a Novomatic classic built for players who like their slots straightforward and their features frequent. Ten lines, five reels and a voyage theme surround one main idea: land the three famous ships on the first, third and fifth reels, and you sail into 10 free games in which those ships become Wilds. Columbus himself is the Wild in the base game and the top-paying symbol.
It is not flashy. But under its traditional look sit some numbers that make it more engaging than many games of its era, including a feature that arrives on average every 80 to 120 games. If you like Novomatic’s deluxe range and want a calmer rhythm than Book of Ra, it is well worth a look.

The theme is the age of exploration. The symbols are linked to Columbus’s voyage: the Queen of Spain who sponsored it, a jewelled necklace, a sextant for navigation and the three ships themselves, the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María. Card values from Ace to Ten are the lower pays. Columbus is both the Wild and the most valuable symbol.
The presentation is classic Novomatic deluxe: clean graphics, simple animations and clear sounds. Everything is easy to read, including on a phone, and nothing gets between you and the result.
There are ten paylines. A win starts on the leftmost reel and runs to the right, with matching symbols next to each other. Only the highest win on each line is paid.
Columbus substitutes for every symbol except the ships. He also pays very well on his own: five Columbus symbols on a line pay 5,000 times the line bet, four pay 1,000 times, three pay 100 times and even two pay ten times. That makes him far more valuable than the next symbol, the Queen of Spain, who pays 1,000 times the line bet for five.
The premium symbols, from the Queen down to the sextant, pay for two of a kind as well as three, four and five. The card symbols need at least three. This is one reason the game has a fairly high hit frequency for a ten-line slot.
Line wins are multiplied by the bet per line, not the total bet. With all ten lines played, the line bet is a tenth of your stake. So five Columbus symbols at 5,000 times the line bet equal 500 times the total bet, and five Queens of Spain equal 100 times the total bet.
Seen that way, the smaller wins are modest. Three card symbols, at five or ten times the line bet, return half to the full stake. Two premium symbols at five times the line bet return half the stake. These small wins keep the balance moving but rarely change it much. The bigger results come from long lines of premiums and from Columbus.
The free games feature is triggered by the three ships, the Niña, Pinta and Santa María, appearing on reels one, three and five. That awards 10 free games at the same stake as the triggering spin.
The key change is simple. During free games, the ship symbols become Wilds and substitute for all other symbols. Since ships appear on the reels throughout the round, you have two kinds of Wild working for you: Columbus and the ships. That makes long lines of premium symbols much more likely than in the base game. If the three ships land again during the round, you receive more free games.
There is no win multiplier during the feature. The extra Wilds are the whole bonus, and they are enough to make rounds noticeably livelier than the base game.
Novomatic’s specification gives two key numbers. The hit frequency is about 36% when all ten lines are played, so more than one spin in three pays something. Many of those wins are smaller than the stake, as the paytable shows.
The free games feature arrives on average about once every 80 to 120 games. That is unusually frequent for a classic slot, and it shapes the whole experience. You will usually not wait very long between features, which keeps sessions moving. The flip side is that most features are moderate in size rather than dramatic.
Remember that these are long-term averages. You may see two features in twenty spins, or none in three hundred. They help you plan, not predict.
Columbus Deluxe exists in several RTP versions: 89.96%, 92.04%, 94.00%, 95.02%, 96.09% and 97.03%. The casino chooses which one you play, and all versions look exactly the same.
The difference is significant over time. On a long session, a version near 90% takes back noticeably more than one near 97%. The only way to know is to check the game’s help screen or ask the casino. Our guide to slot RTP explains why this matters and how to find the figure. Even the best version is a long-term average and does not predict any single session.
Novomatic shows volatility as a graphic rather than a number, so we will describe it from the data instead of attaching a label. A 36% hit rate and a feature every 80 to 120 games point to a game that spreads its returns fairly evenly. The 5,000 times line bet ceiling, equal to 500 times the total bet with ten lines, is moderate. Compared with high-risk classics like Book of Ra Deluxe, Columbus Deluxe tends to feel steadier, with smaller peaks and shorter droughts.
Because Novomatic publishes the same figures for its deluxe games, the two most similar titles are easy to compare. Columbus Deluxe hits on about 36% of spins with ten lines; Dolphin’s Pearl Deluxe on about 25%. The Columbus feature arrives roughly every 80 to 120 games; the Dolphin’s Pearl feature roughly every 230 to 270. The top line prize is 5,000 times the line bet here and 9,000 times in Dolphin’s Pearl, rising to 27,000 times during its tripled free games.
Put together, the picture is clear. Columbus Deluxe gives you more frequent wins and roughly two to three times as many features, each one powered by extra Wilds rather than a multiplier. Dolphin’s Pearl Deluxe makes you wait longer for fewer, potentially bigger moments. Neither is better in absolute terms. If you prefer a steady flow of action, Columbus is the more comfortable choice. If you are happy to trade frequency for a higher ceiling, Dolphin’s Pearl suits you better.
Picture a round triggered by the three ships. Over ten spins, ships land here and there, now acting as Wilds. On spin three, a ship on reel two and Columbus on reel four help complete a four-symbol necklace line. On spin seven, a pair of ships turns two Queens of Spain into a five-symbol line. The round ends with a solid total, perhaps not life-changing, but clearly better than the base game would have produced in the same ten spins.
Now and then, a round lands Columbus symbols and ships on the same line in a way that builds towards his top prize. That is rare. Most rounds sit in the middle: enjoyable, worthwhile, and over fairly quickly.
Columbus Deluxe belongs to Novomatic’s deluxe series, which refreshed classic land-based games with sharper graphics while keeping their rules. Its closest relative is Dolphin’s Pearl Deluxe, which has a win-doubling Wild and free games with tripled wins but a much rarer feature. Lord of the Ocean and Book of Ra Deluxe use expanding symbols in their free games and swing harder. For a game with no feature at all, Sizzling Hot Deluxe is the simplest of the family. What works:
What doesn’t:
Columbus Deluxe is a quietly well-designed classic. Its frequent free games, the double Wild threat during the feature and a generous paytable for Columbus himself give it more rhythm than many old-school slots. It will not deliver the huge peaks of Book of Ra, and it looks its age. But if you want a traditional ten-line game with regular features and you can find a version with a good RTP, it is a solid voyage to take.
