Legacy of Dead Slot Review

Legacy of Dead looks like yet another Egyptian book slot, and for the first few spins it plays like one. The difference shows up in the bonus. Every time free spins retrigger, the game adds a second, third or fourth expanding symbol on top of the ones you already have. That single rule gives long bonus rounds a sense of growth that its famous older relative never had.

It is a high-volatility game with a top prize of 5,000 times the stake, and most of that potential sits inside free spins. If you enjoy the tension of waiting for one big feature, this is one of the better takes on the formula.

The pharaoh’s story and the familiar layout

The setting is a tomb opened at last. Play’n GO’s story is that a greedy king was trapped inside the hieroglyphs of the Book of the Dead, and once the book was opened, his spirit escaped to reclaim his treasure. On the reels that means a dark gold palette, the Mummy, Anubis, Tutankhamun and Horus as the premium symbols, and card royals from Ace down to Ten as the low pays.

The game uses five reels, three rows and ten fixed lines that pay from left to right. Premium symbols pay from two in a row, the royals need three. The Mummy is the top symbol and pays 5,000 times the line bet for five, the same value as five Wilds. Anubis pays 1,600 times the line bet, while Tutankhamun and Horus pay 600 times. Those top line values matter later, because they are what an expanding symbol multiplies across the screen.

One symbol, two jobs

The tomb does double duty. As a Wild it substitutes for every other symbol to complete line wins. As a scatter it pays anywhere on the reels and triggers the bonus. Three tombs pay 2 times your total bet, four pay 20 times and five pay 200 times, and all of them also start free spins.

This dual role has a practical effect on how the base game feels. Two tombs on screen can complete lines, so near misses on the bonus still often pay something small. When the third lands, you get both the scatter payout and the trip into free spins. The base game is otherwise plain. There are no random modifiers and no side features, which keeps your attention focused on the scatter count.

Free spins and the stacking expanding symbols

Three or more tombs give you 8 free spins. Before they start, the game picks one regular symbol at random to be the special expanding symbol. Whenever enough of that symbol lands during a free spin, it grows to fill every position on its reels and pays across all ten lines. The reels do not have to be next to each other. A premium symbol on two reels can be enough, while a royal needs three.

The crucial twist comes with retriggers. Land three or more tombs during the bonus and you receive 8 more spins and a second special symbol, chosen at random, while the first one stays active. Each further retrigger does the same. In Book of Dead, a retrigger only adds spins. In Legacy of Dead, it also adds new ways for the screen to light up, so a long bonus becomes stronger as it goes. The bonus is capped at 96 free spins in total.

How does this play in practice? A round with a single low royal as the expanding symbol and no retrigger usually ends quietly, sometimes with less than the stake you would have spent on those spins. A round where the Mummy or Anubis is chosen can change the session with one good spin, because five expanded Mummies pay 5,000 times the line bet on each of the ten lines. That is exactly where the game’s 5,000x ceiling comes from. The retrigger rule adds a middle ground: two or three moderate symbols working together can produce better results than any one of them alone.

What an expanding symbol is actually worth

It helps to put the paytable into numbers. Your total bet is spread over ten lines, so each line carries a tenth of it. When an expanding symbol fills its reels, it pays its normal line value on every one of the ten lines, which turns the line prize into the same multiple of your whole bet.

Say Anubis is the special symbol and lands on three reels. Three Anubis pay 30 times the line bet, and across ten lines that becomes 30 times your total bet from one spin. If Anubis shows up on all five reels, the figure jumps to 1,600 times the bet. A royal like the Queen, by contrast, pays 5 times for three reels and 80 times for five. The gap explains why bonus rounds feel so different from one another, and why the moment the game reveals its chosen symbol is the most nervous second of the round.

Remember that ordinary line wins are paid first and the expansion is added on top, so a strong spin can combine both.

RTP versions and why to check them

Play’n GO’s default setting is 96.58%. The studio also supplies versions at 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55%, and the casino chooses which one to run. The gap between the top and bottom versions is large over many spins, so open the game’s info screen before you play. Our guide to slot RTP explains how these versions work and why the figure means little for a single session.

Volatility is high. Play’n GO’s own documents put it at the upper end of its ten-point scale. In plain terms that means many spins return nothing, base game wins are mostly small, and the value is concentrated in a feature that does not arrive often. A good bonus can deliver hundreds of times the stake, while a run without one can drain a balance steadily. Our page on high-volatility slots covers what that means for budgeting.

Some casinos also offer an optional gamble after base game wins, where you guess the colour or suit of a hidden card. It depends on the casino and the market, and it does not appear in every version. If it is there, remember that a wrong guess loses the whole win you staked.

How to approach a session

The bet range starts at €0.10 and reaches €100 per spin, so the game works for small and large budgets. The volatility is what should set your stake, not the theme or the size of the top prize.

  • Pick a stake that lets you play several hundred spins. Free spins can take a long time to arrive, and the game pays little between them.
  • Do not judge the bonus by a single round. The randomly chosen symbol makes rounds very uneven, from nearly empty to excellent.
  • Set a stop-loss and a time limit before you begin. Book slots are easy to keep playing “for one more bonus”.
  • Try the free demo above the review first if the format is new to you. It follows the same rules as the real game.

Legacy of Dead or Book of Dead?

Both games come from Play’n GO, share an Egyptian tomb theme and use a symbol that is Wild and scatter at once. Book of Dead gives you 10 free spins with one expanding symbol for the whole round, and a retrigger only adds spins. Legacy of Dead starts with fewer spins, 8, but adds a fresh expanding symbol every time the bonus retriggers.

So which is better? Book of Dead is the purer, more predictable version of the idea, and it has the Rich Wilde charm. Legacy of Dead rewards the long bonus round more, and it lists a higher default RTP. If you liked Book of Dead but wished its retriggers did more, Legacy of Dead is the natural next step. For a newer Egyptian release from the studio with a different bonus engine, look at Myth of Dead.

Why the format has lasted

Book-style slots have been popular in Europe for a long time because they are easy to understand. One symbol to watch, one bonus to wait for, one moment when the screen fills. Legacy of Dead respects that simplicity and makes one well-chosen change. It is a sign of the game’s quality that it remains a lobby staple years after its release, alongside the many other titles on our Play’n GO page.

Legacy of Dead strengths and weaknesses

What works:

  • Each retrigger adds another expanding symbol, so long bonuses grow stronger
  • The tomb as Wild and scatter keeps near misses from feeling completely empty
  • A 96.58% default RTP is competitive for the genre
  • Clear, readable rules with no hidden modifiers

What doesn’t:

  • The base game is very plain between bonuses
  • Lower RTP versions are common, so the default is not guaranteed
  • A bonus with a low royal and no retrigger often pays little
  • High volatility can mean long dry spells

Our verdict on Legacy of Dead

Legacy of Dead is one of the smartest variations on the book formula. It keeps everything that makes these games easy to pick up and adds a retrigger rule that genuinely changes the bonus. The base game is quiet and the swings are real, so it suits patient players with a budget built for volatility. If you want steady small wins, look elsewhere. If you want a classic Egyptian slot where a long bonus can keep getting better, it is one of the best choices in its category.
