Chicago Slot Review

Chicago is an old-school Novomatic slot with one feature worth waiting for: 12 free games in which every win is multiplied by a random x1, x2, x3, x5 or x10. There are no cascades, no collectors and no feature buys. You spin 20 lines in 1930s Prohibition Chicago and wait for three Cadillacs.

The game dates back to Novomatic’s mid-2000s catalogue and is now distributed online by Greentube. It sits at 4 on Greentube’s 1 to 5 volatility scale, which surprises people who expect classic slots to be gentle.

The base game: classic lines and a sharp paytable

Wins pay left to right on 20 lines. The Chicago logo is the Wild and replaces everything except the Cadillac scatter. Below it come Al Capone and Eliot Ness, the lady, the paper boy and the policeman, then card symbols from Ace down to 9.

About one spin in four pays something with all lines active, and most of those wins are small card hits. The paytable is steep at the top. Five Wilds on a line pay 10,000x the line bet, which is 500x your total bet with 20 lines. Five Capones or Nesses pay 2,000x the line bet. Between those extremes there is not much, so the base game feels quiet with occasional jolts.

Free Games with the Bottle Shooting Bonus

Three, four or five Cadillac scatters anywhere trigger 12 free games, and the scatters also pay. During the feature, every win is multiplied by a randomly chosen x1, x2, x3, x5 or x10. That is the bottle-shooting part: each winning spin feels like a little lottery about which multiplier you will get.

According to Novomatic’s own data, the feature lands roughly once every 240 to 270 games on average. That is a useful number for planning a session. At that rate, you might wait a long time, or see two features close together. The 12 spins themselves are often modest, because a x10 on a small card win is still a small win. The magic happens when a x10 meets a Capone, Ness or Wild line. The top theoretical prize in the feature is ten times the 10,000x line-bet Wild line, which equals 5,000x your total bet.

RTP: check which version you are playing

Chicago is one of the clearest examples of a game with many RTP settings. Novomatic offers versions from 90.08% up to 97.03%, including 92.15%, 94.02%, 95.03% and 96.16%. The casino chooses. The difference between the lowest and highest version is huge over time, so look up the figure in the game’s info panel before you settle in. Our guide to slot RTP explains why.

What medium-high volatility feels like here

With one feature, no base game modifiers and a top-heavy paytable, Chicago is streakier than it looks. Most of the value is in rare high-symbol lines and in the free games. A cold run of 300 spins without Cadillacs is entirely possible. When the feature hits with a few good multipliers, it can make up for a lot.

Planning a Chicago session

  • Plan for the feature hit rate. A bankroll that covers 300 or more spins gives you a reasonable chance of seeing the free games at least once.
  • Play all 20 lines. The hit frequency and paytable assume them, and fewer lines reduce your chances of catching the high symbols.
  • Use autoplay limits if you play long sessions, since the base game can be repetitive.

Chicago and its Novomatic relatives

Chicago belongs to the same era as Book of Ra Deluxe and Lucky Lady’s Charm Deluxe. Lucky Lady’s Charm uses a similar idea of multiplied free games, but with a fixed x3 and retriggers. Chicago swaps that for random multipliers and more drama. Greentube has since released linked jackpot versions such as Xtension Link Golden Chicago XL. See our Novomatic page for more of the catalogue.

What holds up and what has aged

Strengths:

  • One clear, exciting feature with multipliers up to x10
  • Simple rules that anyone can follow
  • Strong theme and a classic Novomatic feel

Weaknesses:

  • The base game offers very little between features
  • RTP can be low if the casino chose a weak version
  • Free games often end small unless a x10 meets a big symbol

Is Chicago still worth playing?

Chicago is a no-nonsense classic for players who like waiting for one big moment. The Bottle Shooting multipliers turn an ordinary 12-spin feature into something tense, and the steep paytable leaves room for a strong hit. It is not for anyone who needs constant action, and the RTP depends heavily on the casino. Check that first, keep your stake modest and enjoy the old-school ride.

Gambling should stay fun and affordable. You must be 18+ to play, and our responsible gambling page lists help if you need it.
