When browsing the internet for online casinos, there’s a good chance you will come across an online casino based in Malta. But what does that mean exactly? What does it say about the reliability of the online casino? At Casinokix, we have looked closely at what the Malta casino licence involves and checked which casinos actually hold it. When playing online casino games, you naturally want to know what you’re getting into. You want assurance that not only can you safely place your bets, but also that you’ll actually receive the winnings you make. Discover a number of online casinos licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA).
Best Online Casinos with a Maltese License 2026
Malta licenses remote gambling under the Gaming Act (Cap. 583), in force 1 August 2018, through the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA). The casinos listed below are brands we have reviewed; check each one’s current MGA status on the register. An MGA footer is not a pan-EU passport. Age 18. Euro cashier unless the site lists another currency.
ⓘTerms, bonuses and availability can change. Check the current terms on the casino’s own site before you sign up. 18+ · Play responsibly.
An MGA B2C licence is permission to operate from Malta under Maltese law. It does not overwrite German, Dutch, Swedish, French or UK rules where you sit. Look the company up on the MGA register, not only a seal.
An MGA badge does not promise smooth payments, good games or a fair bonus. A licence is supervision, complaints handling and player-fund rules under Maltese law. It is not a forecast of your session and it is not a pan-EU passport.
If the footer has no MGA number, or the register does not match the company, pick another brand. CasinoKix is an affiliate on some play links; that is not an MGA endorsement.
Online Casino Malta Legislation
The Gaming Act replaced the older Lotteries and Other Games Act framework. Authorisations cover gaming services and critical gaming supply (B2B). Game types sit inside the approved offering: casino (including slots), games of chance, skill, and other approved verticals. Live casino is not a mysterious extra “permit you forgot”; it has to be inside the approved game types on that licence.
Operators must follow MGA player-protection, AML and fund-protection rules. A licence can be suspended or cancelled. Playing from Malta on a licensed site is the local lawful lane. Playing from another country on an MGA site depends on that other country’s law.
MGA (Malta Gaming Authority)
The MGA (successor to the Lotteries and Gaming Authority line that dates to the early 2000s) is the statutory regulator. It issues, supervises and enforces. Malta became a European licensing hub because it wrote a remote-gambling statute early and kept a specialist authority, not because the island is a loophole.
Demand for licences is not the same as quality. Read the company name, licence number and status on the public register. A lapsed or B2B-only number is not a B2C casino you should deposit with.
How to Recognize a MGA Casino?
Licensed and regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), with a number you can search.
Independent testing of RNG games is ordinary on licensed sites. A lab logo is not the MGA itself.
The first check is the footer: company, licence number, MGA wording. Then search that number on the Authority’s register.
If you cannot find the number, ask support for it and stop if they cannot match the register. Chat copy is not a licence.
Polish support and a large lobby are nice. They are not the test. The test is the register plus a cashier that pays out in your name.
How Did the Online Casino World Originate in Malta?
Malta already had land casinos before remote gambling. When online casino software matured in the mid-1990s (Microgaming’s early platforms are the usual industry marker), Malta later built a licensing house for operators who wanted an EU-member base.
The 2018 Gaming Act is the current statute. Talk of a 2017 “implementation” refers to the transition into that Act, not a separate licence.
Payment Options in an Online Casino Malta
Visa and Mastercard: widely listed; credit versus debit is an issuer and operator rule, not an MGA badge.
E-wallets: Skrill, Neteller, PayPal where the cashier shows them.
Bank / open banking: Trustly and similar, plus iDEAL on some Dutch-facing MGA brands (iDEAL is a rail, not a Maltese licence).
Paysafecard and prepaid: often deposit-only.
Euro is the default. Other currencies add FX. Open both cashier tabs. Deposit is not withdrawal.
Fees sit with the casino, the wallet and your bank. There is no universal MGA fee table.
KYC still sits in front of a first cashout. Name on the method must match.
Online Casino Malta Taxation
Players do not pay a 15% tax on MGA winnings. Malta levies gaming tax on the licensed operator (rates sit in MGA / Finance guidance and depend on game type). Recreational player winnings from licensed Maltese gambling are generally not treated as Maltese income tax. Your home country can still tax you. This is not tax advice.
Operator fees, FX and bonus wagering are not a “winnings tax”. Read the cashier and the terms. Confirm your own residence rules with a tax adviser if the amounts are large or you play as a business.

New MGA brands still appear. Dated launches belong on new online casinos. None of the newer casinos in the table above holds an MGA licence; they are the newest brands we currently review, so check the register before you treat any of them as Maltese. A welcome tile is not a licence. Check the register before you treat a 2026 skin as “new and Maltese”.
Bonus Offers in Maltese Casinos
MGA licensees still advertise welcomes, reloads, spins and cashback. Those are operator claims under Maltese consumer and advertising rules, plus the operator’s own T&Cs.
A 100% match on a €50 deposit is €50 of bonus balance. At 35x on bonus only that is €1,750 of eligible stakes. Max bet and game weighting still apply.
Free spins lock to named slots. Reload bonuses are for existing customers. No-deposit credit, when it exists, still has a max cashout.
Frequently Asked Questions – Online Casino Malta
Short answers on the licence, tax, currencies, games and bonuses. Age 18. Responsible Gaming Foundation (Malta) helpline 1777. Gambling is entertainment, not income.
Check the MGA register for the brand you actually open. An MGA number does not authorise play into a closed national market.
What makes Malta-based online casinos popular?
Malta wrote a specialist remote-gambling statute and keeps a public register. Operators like an EU-member base; players get a named authority to search. Popularity is not a pan-EU passport. The licence describes Malta’s permission, not Germany’s or Sweden’s.
Are online casinos in Malta safe to play?
An in-force MGA B2C licence is supervision you can look up: player-fund rules, complaints, audits. It is not a promise you will win or that every payout is instant. Skip brands whose number does not match the register. Age 18.
Can I play with different currencies at Malta online casinos?
Many MGA cashiers list euro plus other currencies. FX is extra cost. Confirm the withdrawal currency, not only the deposit. A multi-currency wallet is not a second licence.
What types of games are available at Malta online casinos?
Whatever the approved offering lists: typically slots, tables, live casino, sometimes poker, bingo or betting. Open the help file for RTP and rules. A studio name is not the MGA licence.
Are there bonuses and promotions for players at Malta online casinos?
Yes, as operator claims. Read wagering, max bet, game locks and expiry. A bonus is not free money. Licensed national markets you play from (Sweden, Germany) can still restrict which MGA bonuses you may see.
Alina Silva runs the content team at CasinoKix. She writes and updates our casino reviews and player guides, with a focus on what European players need to know before they sign up: who actually runs the casino, which licence it holds, and what the bonus and withdrawal terms really say. Every review follows the same method, so licences are checked on the regulator’s own register and the company in the casino’s terms is matched against the licence holder. Spotted something out of date? Email alina (at) casinokix.io with the page link and she’ll take a look.
